Solar technology has witnessed rapid global growth as a sustainable energy source with a wide range of applications. Nigeria has abundant solar energy resources, with an average solar radiation of 5.8 kwh/m2/day, placing it among the sunniest countries in Africa. However, only about 47% of Nigerians have access to electricity and Nigeria is the 14th largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. This scholarly article presents an in-depth review of solar technology, its diverse applications, and its positive and negative externalities. It further explores strategies to mitigate these externalities. The focus then shifts to the context of Nigeria, a country facing energy challenges and unique environmental concerns. The article discusses how solar technology can be applied in Nigeria and how the country can harness its potential while addressing the specific externalities pertinent to its situation. The comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders interested in sustainable energy adoption in Nigeria and beyond.
