Newspaper News on Violence in Healthcare: A Retrospective Review
Purpose: Today, violent incidents are increasing day by day and these incidents are reflected to individuals through the media. Although it is a matter of debate whether violence is transmitted to society or not, hiding violence does not mean that these incidents do not exist. In particular, managers are trying to find solutions to violent incidents that occur in health services, which are one of the basic functions for the development of society. As a result of these situations, the issue of violence in health, which has become increasingly important, forms the basis of the study. The study was conducted to examine violent incidents against health workers and to analyze the reflections of this issue in the media. Method: For the study, the keyword “violence in health” was determined as a criterion in the news reports of 18 national newspapers in the last 6 months (March-August 2024) and a total of 308 news reports were reached. 43 of these studies were about the details of violence against healthcare workers. A total of 24 studies were examined by removing the 43 news reports that constituted the universe of the study and those with similar content from this number. Newspaper reports were examined with a retrospective method for the study. Digital archives were used in the data collection process and the news reports were coded thematically.Findings: For the analysis, newspapers were classified according to their names and the publication dates of these news were examined. According to these dates, the news was mostly published in July and on Mondays. While the city where violent incidents were most common was Istanbul, the hospital type was state hospitals. The perpetrators of violence were mostly relatives of the patients, while the healthcare workers who were subjected to violence were doctors. Although it was not stated in the majority of the news which unit the incidents took place in, it was stated that these incidents mostly took place in emergency services according to the data obtained. In addition, 308 news items included news protesting violence in healthcare and news that violent incidents were not conveyed to the public. Conclusion: The results show that violence against healthcare workers remains a serious problem and that the media needs to raise more awareness on the issue. The study provides recommendations for developing more effective protection measures and training for healthcare workers.
