Turkish teaching in educational and study tools used in second level literacy teaching in public education centres

Adults who do not know how to read and write although their age of compulsory education has passed receive education at public education centres in our country. These adults move on to the Second Stage of the Basic Education Program after learning to read and write. The courses in the Second Stage of the Basic Education Program for Adults at public education centres are carried out through course books. It is a known fact that the quality of course books significantly influences education. Accordingly, the purpose of this research was to evaluate the content of the instruction tool and trainee study tool used in the Second Stage of the Basic Education Program for Adults at public education centres. For this purpose, the subjects taught in the themes of the instruction tool and trainee study tool were examined. Within the scope of the study, the Turkish education chapter in the books was analysed using the document analysis method. For coding the data, the researchers created a coding form for course books and workbooks. What kind of knowledge and skills are covered for four basic language skills, vocabulary, and grammar in the books were coded to this coding form. Data were analysed with the descriptive analysis approach. As a consequence of the research, it was seen that some essential topics and concepts related to reading skill were included and that there were deficiencies regarding listening/monitoring skill. It was determined that practices related to writing skill were diversified in the books. With regard to speaking skill, it was observed that prepared speech exercises on various topics were included. When the books were evaluated in terms of vocabulary and vocabulary teaching, it was noteworthy that exercises on various dimensions of vocabulary were included. Concerning spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules, it was detected that the most fundamental issues were elaborated.
