Expansion and Contraction of Meaning in the Words “İç-, Sök-, Yayıl-, Bilge, Berk, İsig” from Old Turkic to Present

Within the living and developing dynamics of the language, a number of changes have occurred in words from the beginning to the present day, both in terms of sound, form, meaning, etc. Many phenomena and events such as technological and cultural developments, science, art, changes in beliefs, war, migration, disaster lead to changes in the vocabulary of the language. As a matter of fact, new developments may require new words or new meanings for existing words. This can sometimes happen by gaining additional meanings to the old meanings, sometimes by completely abandoning the old meaning and losing it and gaining a brand new meaning instead. In this respect, meaning changes and some meaning events occur in words in a long process. Over time, depending on the needs, meaning events occur in words, which are covered by terms such as meaning contraction, meaning expansion and meaning change. In this paper, we discussed the words iç-, sök-, yayıl-, bilge, berk, isig, which have been used since Old Turkish, in terms of meaning narrowing and semantic expansion. Considering the meanings of these words in the intermediate periods, we analysed the changes that occurred by comparing their meanings in Old Turkish with their meanings in Turkey Turkish.
