Based on the Medresetü-1 Eimmeti vel Hutaba established by the Ottoman Empire in 1913, imam hatip high schools emerged to meet the need for imam hatip at that time Initially in the form of madrasas, these schools were transformed into imam hatip schools in 1924, one year after the proclamation of the Republic, and started education with the adoption of the Law on Unification of Education, Unfortunately, these schools did not last long and were closed down in 1930. In 1948, a motion was passed to open Imam Hatip Training Courses in order to train people to fulfil the religious services required by Muslim citizens. These courses, which were held in a total of 10 course centres across Turkey for a period of 10 months, were considered as a step towards the opening of Imam Hatip Schools in 1951. Imam Hatip Schools, which gave their first graduates in the 1954-1955 academic year, became a 7-year secondary education institution with a 3-year high school department. These schools, the number of which increased day by day, continued their education as 3-year secondary school and 4-year high school in 1980. The Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, which was opened in Istanbul Beykoz in 1985, was moved to Kartal in 1990. In 1997, with the coefficient application and eight years of uninterrupted education, the number of students of these schools decreased. However, with the abolition of the coefficient application in 2011 and the 4+4+4 application in 2012, the middle section was reopened. Since 2016, science and social sciences project departments have been opened in imam hatip high schools with a variety of programmes, and students have been admitted to these schools through examinations. The diversity of programmes implemented in imam hatip high. schools in recent years has led to important debates regarding the basic mission of these institutions. This study aims to provide an analysis of the education and training of imam hatip high schools in the fields of science and social sciences, sports, contemporary arts and music, which are called project schools" in the literature, with a focus on the province of Batman, in this context, it will be an important step to examine the criticisms faced by these high schools and to offer solutions.
