Purpose: Traffic accidents in the province of Diyarbakır are at a level that cannot be ignored and traffic safety awareness is required to prevent traffic accidents. In this thesis study, it is aimed to determine the demographic characteristics of active drivers in Diyarbakır, how they behave in the traffic environment, whether they have had traffic accidents in their driving lives and to determine the causes. Method: For Diyarbakır Province, the studies on the compliance of drivers with traffic lights and respect for pedestrians to increase traffic safety, reduce accidents and material and moral losses, and ensure safe transport were examined. This study was designed in quantitative research method and survey model. In this context, the relational screening model was preferred among the types of screening models to determine the relationships between the variables of the research. The population of the research consists of N = 668 real drivers with a driving licence residing in Diyarbakır city centre in 2024. A large part of the data were obtained through questionnaire forms prepared with google form and some of them were taken by face-to-face survey. Data analysis was carried out with SPSS 25 programme. Parametric tests were applied due to the normal distribution of the data. Findings: As a result of the study, although the participation of the real drivers participating in the study in obeying traffic rules, obeying traffic light rules and traffic safety behaviours was high, their respect for pedestrians in traffic behaviours were not found to be at a sufficient level. Education, frequency of driving and age of the vehicle had a positive effect on drivers' perceptions of traffic safety and respect for pedestrians. It was concluded that the traffic safety and pedestrian respect perceptions of drivers who frequently received traffic fines and were involved in accidents with injury or death were low. Result: Education and supervision have a great share in reducing traffic accidents. Traffic safety cannot be ensured only by establishing certain rules. It is necessary to raise awareness of people about traffic. In this respect, it is thought that determining the defects of drivers, especially their compliance with traffic lights and respect for pedestrians in Diyarbakır province will be important in terms of future interventions for traffic safety.
