Hair dyeing is a widely practiced cosmetic procedure, both in professional salons by experts and at home by consumers. It is popular among those looking to cover gray hair, while younger age groups also use hair dye to refresh their look and express personal style [1]. Traditional hair dyes typically contain chemicals such as ammonia and peroxide, which penetrate the hair for a lasting color change [2]. However, these chemicals can damage hair structure, cause allergic reactions on sensitive skin, and have known environmental impacts. In recent years, the demand for environmentally friendly, healthy, and sustainable products has driven a significant transformation in the hair dye industry, aligned with the European Union's green deal, which supports environmental sustainability goals [3]. As awareness of the adverse effects of synthetic dyes has grown, consumers are increasingly turning toward safer, eco-friendly options that protect hair health [4]. These products offer a safer alternative by aiming to achieve color change without compromising hair integrity. This review summarizes information on new-generation hair dyes formulated with plant-based components and natural ingredients that protect hair health. For instance, ingredients derived from plants like coconut, amla, hibiscus, and reetha provide color changes while preserving the natural structure of the hair. Pal et al.'s study has examined the use of these botanical ingredients in hair dyes, showing that natural pigments can effectively color hair [5]. Additionally, Lyu et al. have conducted research on using bioengineered microorganisms to produce natural pigments for hair dye production [6]. These biotechnological approaches facilitate the propagation of botanical pigments through microbial fermentation, enhancing their coloring properties [6]. This approach offers a more sustainable alternative to traditional pigment production techniques. However, plant-based dyes tend to be less long-lasting on hair and offer limited color options, challenges that are being addressed through new technologies. In the future, advancements in biotechnology are expected to diversify natural and sustainable hair dyes, expand their color range, and enhance their durability. It is anticipated that new-generation dyes, which provide long-lasting colors while maintaining hair health, will gain a stronger foothold in the market, potentially replacing traditional dyes [6]. With consumers' growing sensitivity to environmental and health concerns, natural ingredient-based hair dyes offer a sustainable choice for protecting individual hair health and minimizing environmental impact. In this context, new-generation hair dyes are becoming an integral part of a transformation in the hair dye sector, emphasizing environmental responsibility and user health.
