DETERMINATION OF CHEMICAL CONTENTS OF Lallemantia iberica (M.Bieb.) Fisch. C.A.Mey SPECIES BY LC-MS/MS AND GC-MS

The Lamiaceae family, known for its rich medicinal properties, is at the core of ethnomedicine and traditional health systems worldwide. As the sixth largest family of angiosperms, Lamiaceae comprises over 245 genera and nearly 8,000 species globally. In Turkey, this family is considered the third largest in terms of species diversity. Lallemantia iberica (M.Bieb.) Fisch. C.A.Mey (commonly known as Dragon's head) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family with notable medicinal and essential oil properties, making it a versatile species for industrial applications. This species is native to the Caucasus and has been cultivated since ancient times in Southwest Asia, including Iran, Turkey, and Southeastern Europe. Locally, it is used by communities for treating conditions such as stress, fever, cough, and liver and kidney diseases. In traditional medicine, it is also used as a stimulant and expectorant for treating colds, nervous disorders, and hypertension. In this study, essential oil was obtained from the aerial parts of L. iberica species collected from Mardin region of Turkey by hydrodistillation method using Clevenger apparatus. The components of the essential oils were determined by GC-MS/FID. Furthermore, phenolic contents of ethanol extracts obtained from the root, branch, leaf, flower, and mixed parts of the plant, which were dried in the shade and powdered, were determined using LC-MS/MS for qualitative and quantitative analysis. According to the results, 98.12% of the essential oil was elucidated, with a total of 27 components identified. Major components of the essential oil were determined to be germacrene D (34.54%), β-bourbonene (9.85%), and linalool (8.46%). LC-MS/MS results revealed that the ethanol extracts of the leaf, flower, and root parts were generally rich in chlorogenic acid (10.613 mg analyte/g extract), cosmosiin (9.912 mg analyte/g extract), and rosmarinic acid (5.224 mg analyte/g extract), respectively, while the mixed part was found to be rich in cynaroside (5.094 mg analyte/g extract). The volatile oil and chemical components of L. iberica, traditionally used by local communities for treating stress, fever, cough, and liver and kidney diseases, have been analyzed in this study, contributing valuable insights to the scientific literature.
