ANALYSIS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE GENERATED IMAGES IN THE CONTEXT OF ART AND TECHNOLOGY: THE CASE OF DALL-E

As rapidly evolving communication technologies shape human life, numerous innovations are becoming integrated into our social lives. In this context, artificial intelligence applications, which are one of the most popular topics of our time, are swiftly permeating our social lives, bringing along various changes. Especially, photography, one of the most commonly encountered applications in terms of allocating time to activities people enjoy, is being reshaped with artificial intelligence technology. Notably, the inclusion of content generated by artificial intelligence among the winning photographs in the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards has sparked many debates regarding the use of artificial intelligence in photography. In this study, conducted in light of ongoing discussions about the future of photography and artificial intelligence applications, artificial intelligence-generated contents were evaluated by four expert photographers to identify technical deficiencies and competencies in photography. Artificial intelligence images produced in four different categories; nature photography, product photography, architectural photography, and portrait photography, were categorized, with four images generated by artificial intelligence for each type of photography. Within the scope of the study, the DALL-E application developed by OpenAI, which has gained popularity through visual content production, was selected as an example. Sixteen contents produced using the DALL-E application were evaluated by four expert photographers, and through the use of descriptive content analysis, a qualitative research method, the study was conveyed. The study, which approaches discussions about the future of artificial intelligence and photography from a scientific perspective, will discuss the perception of reality regarding the contents produced by artificial intelligence.
