İslam düşünce tarihinde irâde hürriyeti ve insanın eylemindeki rolü meselesi üzerinde yoğun tartışmaların yapıldığı bir mevzu olmuştur. Kelâm ekolleri insanın irâdesi, kudreti ve fiilindeki rolü meselesini farklı şekillerde değerlendirmişlerdir. Esasen Allah'ın mutlak irâdesi karşısında insan irâdesinin konumu, sınırları ve buna bağlı olarak ortaya çıkan meseleleri birçok düşünür ele almış ve değerlendirmiştir. Buna rağmen bu mesele hala muğlaklığını korumaktadır. İrâde konusunda "Allah'ın mutlak irâdesinin insanın irâdesini sınırlandırıp sınırlandırmadığı ve insanın irâdesinde özgür olup olmadığı" hususu kelâm âlimlerinin de en çok üzerinde durduğu konulardandır. Esasen insanın fiili irâde etmesi, ardından ihtiyarı ile fiile ilişkin tercihte bulunması ve fiilin işlenmesine yönelik var olan gücünü kullanması davranışlarından sorumlu tutulmasının gereğidir. Kesb teorisi insanın işlediği fiilde icra ettiği fonksiyonu ifade eder. Kesb, ilk kez Eş'arî tarafından bir doktrin haline getirilmiştir. Bilindiği üzere insanın fiildeki rolü ve hürriyeti problematiğini Mu'tezile insan unsuru ile Cebriyye ise sadece Allah ile çözmeye çalışmıştır. Cebrî ve Mu'tezilî doktrin karşısında Allah'ın aşkınlığına ve sıfatlarına halel getirmeden insanın fiilinde irade ve gücü ile etkin olduğunu ispatlamaya çalışan Ehl-i Sünnet ise bunu kesb teorisi ile çözmeye çalışmıştır. Eş'arî ve Mâtürîdî kelâmcıların "kesb savunması" esasında bir "uzlaştırma hareketi"dir. Kesbin hakikati ise Eş'arî ve Mâtürîdî düşüncede farklı şekilde anlamlandırılmıştır. Eş'arî âlimlerin çoğunluğunun insan fiilleri konusunda ilâhî irade ve kudrete odaklanması, fiilde insanın irade ve gücünün ihmal edilmesine, irade hürriyetinin tam olarak açıklanamamasına veya belirginleşmemesine neden olduğu söylenebilir. Mâtürîdîyye âlimleri ise insan sorumluluğunu temellendiren görüşleri ile bir yandan fiillerde ilâhî yaratıcılığa rol biçerek ulûhiyeti yüceltirken, diğer yandan insanın fiilini kendine ait kılmada başarılı bir açıklama yöntemi geliştirerek kesb teorisini anlaşılır bir şekilde vuzuha kavuşturmuşlardır. Neticede Mâtürîdî kelâmcıların kesb ve yaratma anlayışlarındaki ifadelerinde, insan hürriyeti vurgusu daha net ve belirgindir denilebilir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Kesb, Eş'arî, Kudret, İrade, Fiil.
