Özet Günümüzde kısmen de olsa kendi kesmiş adını ve yolunu restore etmeye çalışan "İpek Yolu" bir zamanlar Çin'den Avrupaya kadar büyük önem taşıyordu. Bazı ülkeler Selçuklu istilası sayesinde, İslam kültürü sınırları içine girdiler. Bu ülke için ticari gelişmeye neden olan engeller kaldırıldı. Ülkelerde hızlı bir ekonomik ve kültürel yükselme dönemi başladı. Milletlerarası ticaret kervanlarının emniyeti ve dinlenmesi için Selçuklu devletinin kurduğu örgüt ekonomik olduğu kadar sosyal ve kültürel cepheleri ile de çok büyük bir önem taşıyor. Kervansaraylar adıyla bir kontrolün olması, Bahdar veya Tutgavul kumandası bir muhafız destesi tayin etmekle, keravan da güvenlik altında yönetiliyordu. Bu önemli tedbirler yanında da kervanların geçtiği kervan yolları üzerinde duran her konak yerinde (menzilde) inşa edilen görkemli karvansaraylar halen ziyaretçileri hayran koymaktadır. Daha onların iç organizasyonu ve hizmetleri, kültür tarihinde daha çok hayranlık veren bir özellik göstermektedir. Burada kalan insanların her türlü ihtiyaçları düşünülerek inşa edilen bu muhteşem yapılarda yolcular, hayvanları ile birlikte üç gün kalmakla, yemek yemek imkanlarına sahipler. Hastalar burada tedavi edilir, ayakkabısı olmayan fakir yolculara ayakkabı veriliyordu. Büyük karvansaraylarda hastahane, cami, doktor ve ilaç da olması bunların kültürel ve sosyal örgütünün anlamak açısından dikkati çekmekdedir. Bu yüksek kültürel eserleri kafilelerin güvenliği açısından da çok önemlidir. Büyük karvansaraylar, kale gibi inşa edilerek, muhteşem duvarları, burçları ve demir kapıları ile zengin emtia taşıyan kervanları koruyur, aynı zamanda emin bir sığınak görevi taşıyordu.
