During silent reading, the sounds of the words read are heard in the mind. This phenomenon is called "inner voice, inner language or mind reading". This voice is the inner voice of the individual. It occurs during silent reading and plays a central role. When reading silently, letters are automatically translated into sounds, creating a sound in the brain as if read aloud before. Then, the word is understood by combining its meaning with visual analysis of the word. Thus, the inner voice enables understanding of words, sentences and text. Expert readers read and understand the words by hearing the small inner sound of the words in their brain. The inner voice comes to the fore in processes such as developing mental processes, planning, problem solving, reflection or self-knowledge. Research shows that the inner voice is effective not only in reading and understanding, but also in various mental processes such as learning, thinking, questioning and evaluation. It has been suggested that this phenomenon was previously related to reading aloud and was a continuation of reading aloud. Thereupon, the processes performed in the brain during oral and silent reading began to be investigated. Current research shows that the processes carried out in the brain during oral and silent reading are different. It is explained that silent reading is a different type. Silent reading develops in children as a result of their oral reading skills progressing, becoming automatic and internalized over the course of three to four years. Therefore, children should be taught to read out loud from an early age and their oral reading skills should be sufficiently developed. Over time, they should be made to internalize reading aloud and switch to silent reading. The paper is discussed within this framework, and the role and function of the inner voice in silent reading is emphasized
