Özet (AI):
Internal discipline, efficient studying and learning skills, active listening skills, motivation and personal characteristics play important roles in academic achievement of the child at school age. Parents have a lot of duties in support of these factors. In the study we aimed to determine the effects of parents on academic achievement of the school-age children of immigrant families. To get necessary data we interviewed with the teachers of immigrant students in some Primary and Secondary Schools in the city of Erzincan. Focused Group Interview technique, one of the Qualitative Research Methods, was used in the study, as we would research academic achievements of immigrant students in various schools and interview with their teachers. The views obtained from the teachers suggest that the parents of immigrant students are not interested in their children for their achievements and have much expectation from the teachers, school management and local administration. As the academic language proficiency of immigrant parents and their educational levels are lower than the native ones, the students can hardly benefit from their parents. Economic conditions of the immigrant families are under the normal level, which affects their school-age children for afterschool academic activities such as private courses. As a result of the study, we have the conclusion that the school-age immigrant students should be allowed to benefit from Youth Centres, and their parents should be admitted to Parents Training Programs provided by Public Training Centres of the Directory of National Education and encouraged to get interested in their children in terms of motivation, internal discipline, efficient communication and academic achievements in school environment.
