Nursing Department's Students' Smartphone Addiction And Physical Activity Levels

Purpose: This study was done with the aim of determining the level of smartphone addiction and physical activity of nursing students.Method: The research was done with students studying in the nursing department of an university located in the province of Istanbul.All students who accepted the study were not included in the study and were not included in the study.The data were collected by the survey method based on the volunteer of nursing students and the study was completed with 324 students.In the data collection, the indicative features form, the "international physical activity survey" and the "smart phone addiction scale short form" were used to determine the smartphone addiction and physical activity levels of nursing students.It also received written approvals by making a statement to the persons who agreed to participate in the ethical board permission, institution permission and work before the start of the research.The study found that 78.7% of the students participated in the study were women, 27.5% were first-class, 46.3% were mother’s primary school graduates, 32.1% were father’s high school graduates, 78.1% were equal to income expenses and 73.1% were living with their family.Students have determined that the purpose of using the smartphone is to study classes (83.6 per cent), to follow up-to-date information (84.6 per cent), to watch movies and listen to music (83.6 per cent) and to participate in social sharing (88.9 per cent).The time of use of the smartphone is 112.71 ± 91.33 minutes for the course, 145.81 ± 61.33 minutes for the current information, 131.46 ± 16.29 minutes for the movie/music viewing and 159.47 ± 81.19 minutes for social sharing.53.1 percent of nursing students have health problems and these problems are often seen as vision problems, headaches, and sleep problems.The student’s smartphone addiction score was 34.03±9.14.42.7 percent of nursing students were light, 83.3 percent medium and 33.3 percent were not active in severe physical activity.The majority of students (67.3%) were not physically active, the average score of smartphone addiction varied according to the levels of physical activity of the students, and the average score of smartphone addiction increased as the level of physical activity decreased (p≤0.001).It has been found that sex does not affect the levels of physical activity and smartphone addiction (p>0.05).The result: Nursing students' smartphone addiction score average and physical activity levels were very low.It has been determined that gender does not affect the levels of physical activity and smartphone addiction, that the average score of smartphone addiction varies according to the levels of physical activity of students, and that the average score of smartphone addiction increases as the level of physical activity decreases.According to these findings, it may be recommended that students be directed to physical activity, awareness of the negative yields of smartphone use.
