INVESTIGATING THE EFFECT OF ROAD CONDITIONS ON TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
Road, environment, human and air are among the factors that affect traffic accidents the most. Among these factors, serious increases in traffic accidents can be observed in winter months depending on road conditions. Among the road conditions, snow, water and icing as well as the slope of the road are among the important parameters in winter months. On high slope road sections, there may be a decrease in vehicle control in the direction of descent. On the other hand, on icy, snowy or wet road sections, stopping distance may increase and vehicle control becomes difficult. In this study, both factors were evaluated together in order to reveal the situations where the accident risk is the highest. A total of nine different classes were created in which both situations were evaluated together. Then, naive bayes algorithm, a machine learning algorithm, was used to measure the success of this classification. Approximately 87% accuracy was obtained in the results obtained with this algorithm. According to the classification made by the algorithm, it was determined that the risk of accident on high slope roads is a more important factor than icing on the road and the risk of accident is approximately 3 times higher on icy and high slope road sections than under normal conditions. As a result of the study, an accident risk map was created using ArcGIS software.
