A RESEARCH ON FEAR OF MISSING DEVELOPMENTS (FoMO): THE CASE OF ÇANAKKALE ONSEKİZ MART UNIVERSITY
Communication, which has emerged as the most important phenomenon throughout the history of humanity, is one of the most studied areas in the light of science. With the development of communication technologies, our world has turned into a global village. Today, most of the social relations between individuals are established over the internet and smart devices, and physical distances are easily overcome. Technologies that cause the acceleration of communication; It has also carried the production and consumption processes of fields such as information, news and information to a different dimension. The rapid progress of instant information sharing in the globalizing world has created both positive and negative effects. New technologies, which have a very beneficial effect in terms of removing physical obstacles, have also created the concept of 'Fear of Missing Out', which we define as a type of anxiety. The type of anxiety translated into our language as 'fear of missing out on the agenda', in its most general definition, is the state of being a part of the society, not being aware of events that take place in the place where they live or of great global importance, and thinking that they have missed the latest developments. The fear of missing the agenda, which increases in direct proportion to the use of social media, is predominantly observed in the younger generation. Since it is a new document in the literature, the survey application was adopted as a quantitative research method in the study. The new generation who lives in Turkey and will work in the media sector; Within the scope of the research conducted to measure the levels of fear of missing the agenda, 400 students from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Communication were selected as participants, and FoMO levels were tried to be determined by the questioning technique. When the frequency of following the news of the participants is investigated, it is understood that the majority of them follow more than one news every day. In addition, according to the results of the research; While social media platforms are at the forefront of the channels used while following the news, radio has been the least preferred medium. The answers to the multiple-choice questions presented to the participants in a digital way were collected and transformed into meaningful data. As a result of the research, it was determined that there is a relationship between the fear of missing the agenda and technology addiction.
