THE EFFECT OF INFLATION AND URBANIZATION ON WOMEN'S EMPLOYMENT: THE CASE OF TURKIYE
Introduction: Inflation can simply be defined as continuous increases in the general level of prices. High inflation in Turkey has been one of the most important macroeconomic problems for decades. High inflation in Turkey has been one of the most important macroeconomic problems for decades. Since high inflation increases economic uncertainties about the future and distorts the price perception, it negatively affects the expectations and economic decisions of economic units. In this respect, there is a close relationship between inflation and employment, development, wages, and social policies. This research examined the long- and short-term effects of inflation and urbanization on women's employment in Turkey from 1991 to 2023. Materials and Methods: In the study, the ratio of women's employment to the total population (over 15 years old), consumer prices and the annual % change rate in urbanization rate were taken as representations of women's employment, inflation and labor force. Within the scope of the study, firstly, the stationarity of the variables was tested using ADF and PP unit root tests. In the next stage, the econometric relationship between the variables was estimated using the ARDL bounds test proposed by Pesaran et al. (2001). Results: The results of the research showed that inflation and urbanization are cointegrated with women's employment in the long run. The results revealed that inflation and urbanization positively affect and increase women's employment. For the short term, the relationship between the variables is positive. Discussion and Conclusion: The results of the research showed that the cost of living caused by high inflation significantly encouraged women's participation in the labor force. Cities are at the center of economic activity. For this reason, the increase in the rate of urbanization positively affects labor force participation and women's employment.
