The famous Baku millionaire, great philanthropist, and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev rendered invaluable services to the development of education and culture in Azerbaijan.“A nation whose mothers are illiterate is blind,” said H.Z. Tagiyev, who spent a large amount of money on the training of national personnel, the education of women, and the opening of schools. The opening of the first girls' school providing secular education in Baku was also carried out by Tagiyev. Although he repeatedly appealed to the tsar for the opening of a girls' school, permission was granted to open this school only in 1901. H.Z. Tagiyev, who spent 183,583 rubles on the construction of the school building, equipped this school with all the necessary equipment, and at the same time, he deposited 125,000 manats in the bank as inviolable capital for the school's expenses, the interest on which was spent on the needs of the school. The opening of the school exclusively for Azerbaijani girls put Tagiyev's life in danger. He was threatened with death. The clergymen accused him of opposing religion by citing verses from the Quran. However, since Taghiyev had influence among the people and conservative friends, this malice did not happen. In order to silence these black-collar clergymen, H.Z. Taghiyev gave a gift to Mirza Muhammad oglu and sent him to holy places, and asked him for a document signed by religious figures stating that there was no contradiction between the education of Muslim girls in modern schools and religion and Sharia. The school first started operating with 58 students. 35 of those students received free education. Most of the girls who studied were from Transcaucasia. A small part were girls from the North Caucasus. Girls from Tbilisi and Shusha were the majority. The girls studying at the school were between 8 and 11 years old. Teachers and students had a special uniform. H.Z. Taghiyev dreamed of turning the school into a gymnasium in the future. The prominent Azerbaijani educator H. Zardabi closely participated in the development of the school's curriculum. His wife, Hanifa Aliyeva Zardabi, who studied at the "Holy Nina" girls' school in Tbilisi, worked as a principal at H.Z. Tagiyev's girls' school. The school's curriculum included Sharia, mother tongue, Russian, nature, mathematics, handicrafts and geography. Visual aids and maps were also used in the lessons. Along with education, upbringing was also carried out in a special way at the school. Attention was paid to neatness, cleanliness, etiquette and cultural behavior in upbringing.H.Z. Tagiyev's girls' school had a significant impact on the development of women's education in Azerbaijan.
