The Evaluation Of Minarets Of Some Historical Mosques In Uşak To Mitigate/Prevent The Possible Earthquake Effects

Historical religious buildings play an important role in handling the trauma caused by the earthquake. The demolishment of the minarets may cause damages to the main mass of the mosques. This study aims to evaluate the vulnerable points of minarets of historical mosques to mitigate/prevent their possible collapse under the earthquake effect. With this aim, nine minarets affected by the Kahramanmaraş centered earthquakes dated to 6 February 2023 were examined, a grading system was formed and vulnerable points of the minarets of historical mosques selected in Uşak were graded in accordance with the parameters of this grading system; with regard to minaret-main mass of the mosque relationship, material and macro element/section discontinuity. The method applied in this study indicates that the minarets completely connected to the main mass of the mosques are the most vulnerable ones; body-transition element from kürsü to body, petek-şerefe, kürsütransition element from kürsü to body connections, and material discontinuity at the same or different macro element connections of the minaret are vulnerable points; and Ulu Mosque’s minaret, one of the evaluated minarets in Uşak, should be intervened first. This method may be added to the Guidelines on Earthquake Risk Management of Historical Structures of the Republic of Türkiye General Directorate of Pious Foundations; and hence taking urgent, temporary and reversible precautions could be provided in the first stage before a possible earthquake.
