Özet (AI):
Quince (Cydonia oblonga Miller) is one of the main pome stone fruits grown in Turkey. Quince is planted for fruits and rootstocks. Therefore, breeding programs for developing new cultivars which are important for economic production is a critical issue for producers. However, in quince, it is hard to distinguish many genotypes according to their phenotypic differences. Thus, researchers use molecular markers for characterization and identification within the genetic materials for breeding purposes. There are different kinds of molecular markers utilized in quince studies. A first molecular study in quince is isoenzyme technique. Because of the limitations of the isozyme markers, later researcher turns to PCR-based molecular markers for instance "Random amplified polymorphic DNA" (RAPD), "Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism" (AFLP), "Sequence-related amplified polymorphism" (SRAP), and "Simple sequence repeat" (SSR) markers. Determination of genetic varieties and relationships based on morphological, physiological and biochemical methods are largely affected by environmental factors, so molecular markers are the best solution for characterization and germplasm studies in quince.
