New Phobia Created By Modern Technology: Fear Of Cell Phone Absence (nomofobia)

International Conference on Quality in Higher Education (icqh) 2018 Summary Smartphones, which appear parallel to the rapid developments and changes in the field of technology, have become an integral part of the everyday lives of individuals.The facilities that smartphones bring to individuals in everyday life are not denied; however, excessive and problematic use of smartphones can also cause many negative psychological effects on individuals.Addiction, the weakening of face-to-face communication, the increased individualization of individuals, stress, anxiety are some of them.However, smartphone addiction is among the most important addictions of the age.Recently, such addictive and problematic uses have been referred to as a phenomenon in the area concerned.This is a “nomofobia”.Nomofobia is defined as the fear of being deprived of mobile phones/smart phones/ devices.Nomofobia is the fear and anxiety that individuals feel in themselves when they cannot access and/or communicate with their mobile devices.In the summer of the field, the existence of nomofobia as well as the "fomo" (fear of misleading progress), "netlessfobia" (fear of being out of the internet) is also discussed.Considering the frequent use of smartphones on young people, it is clear that, parallel to this situation, nomofobia is widespread, especially among young people.With all of this in mind, this study is an aggregate study that reveals the symptoms of the nomofobia phenomenon, which is almost a new disease of the age, its lower dimensions, different patterns of behavior, its negative effects on individuals and especially university students.Abstract smart phones, which occur in parallel with the rapid developments and changes in the field of technology, have settled into the daily lives of individuals and have become an indispensable part of their lives.the convenience of smart phones to individuals in daily life is undeniable; however, the excessive and problematic use of smartphones can create many negative psychological effects on individuals.Addiction, weakening of face to face communication, more individualization of individuals, stress, restlessness are some of them.However, smartphone addiction has become one of the most important dependencies of the age.recently, this type of dependent and problematic uses have been named as a case in the literature.This phenomenon is “nomophobia”.Nomophobia as a concept; defined as fear of deprivation of mobile phones / smartphones / devices.another definition is nomophobia; fear and anxiety that individuals feel in themselves when they are unable to access and/or communicate with their mobile devices.In addition to nomophobia, "fomo" (fear of missing out) and "netlessphobia" (fear of internet connection) cases are also present in the literature.considering the frequent use of smartphones on young people; parallel to this situation, it is clear that nomophobia is becoming widespread among young people.considering all this, in this study is a compilation study; the symptoms of nomophobia that have a almost new disease of the era, different behavioral patterns, negative effects on individuals have been revealed.
