DIGITAL FATIGUE: SYMPTOMS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AND PARENTAL AWARENESS LEVELS
Digital fatigue is a new form of exhaustion characterized by physical, mental, and emotional fatigue resulting from prolonged interaction with digital devices such as computers, smartphones, and televisions. The most noticeable symptom is eye strain, but digital fatigue is also associated with various other issues such as headaches, neck pain, chronic fatigue, insomnia, forgetfulness, irritability, and anxiety. Additionally, the stress and sense of overwhelm brought on by social media usage can further exacerbate this condition. The purpose of this study is to examine the symptoms of digital fatigue resulting from prolonged screen use in children and the level of parental awareness, in order to discuss potential developmental issues and provide recommendations for prevention. The study employed a qualitative research method using a case study design. The research participants were 60 parents of children aged 0-18, selected using purposive sampling from those who voluntarily participated in the study and had applied to health institutions for various reasons. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form and analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results revealed various physical, mental, and emotional fatigue symptoms associated with children’s digital device use. Physical fatigue included posture problems, back and neck pain, eye redness, and the development of dark circles under the eyes. Additionally, difficulties in sleeping and waking, feelings of tiredness, and attention deficits after digital device use were reported. Mental fatigue was manifested in the form of a lack of response to external stimuli, delayed reactions, and difficulty speaking. Mental effects such as slow responses, forgetfulness, and concentration problems increased after digital device usage. Emotional fatigue was seen in children’s reluctance to stop using digital devices, as well as aggressive behavior, crying, impatience, and frustration when asked to discontinue use. The study also found that parents were insufficient in applying and maintaining rules to prevent their children's digital device dependency. This failure resulted in children encountering inappropriate content, developing antisocial personalities, and fearing that they might lose their children to the digital world.
