Özet:
(AI):
The study assessed the Teaching of Geographic Information System (GIS) in Senior Secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. A sample size of 24 geography teachers was drawn from a population of 86 teachers in 24 Public Senior Secondary Schools in the study area. Purposive sampling technique was used to select one geography teacher from each school for the study. The reason was to cover all the schools and also to ensure that each school was represented in the study. The study was guided by four research questions and two hypotheses. Teachers’ Questionnaire on the Teaching of GIS (TQTGIS) was the instrument used to collect data for the study. Experts in the fields of geography education unit and test, measurement and evaluation unit from the Faculty of Education, University of Jos scrutinized the instrument on content validity. Internal consistency of instruments was obtained using Cronbach Alpha technique to determine the reliability of the instruments. A value of 0.973 was obtained which showed that the instrument was reliable for the study. The instrument was administered on the respondents and data obtained were coded and analysed. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square of independent variable at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis was with the aid of SPSS version 23.0. The findings of the study revealed that, most Geography teachers did not have the competence and training to teach GIS content hence, some skipped the practical aspect. Also, erratic power supply and inadequate computers and other materials for teaching GIS were inadequate and in some cases unavailable. Hence, most teachers in Jos North plateau state tend to develop negative attitude towards teaching GIS content in public secondary schools. The study recommended among others that there should be massive training and retraining of geography teachers in computer applications through seminars, workshops and conferences. Also, alternative power such as solar power installation in schools as well provision of available materials for teaching GIS by the government.
