DUAL PURPOSE FODDER CROPS
Dual-purpose crops are plant species that simultaneously provide the availability of grain human food and animal feed. Compared to grain-only crops, dual-purpose crops help significantly improve the profitability, environmental sustainability, and resilience of the entire farm system. Current feeding models allow for dietary decisions based solely on nutrient quality and quantity, which complicates the concept of sustainability. Balanced feeding of animals can effectively convert inedible forage crops into human food. Balanced feeding systems can also result in improved animal health and production, and increased capacity to support increasing global food demands.
