In this study, we discussed Emile Boutroux, David Bohm and Jacques Monod’s approaches to the causality problem. The reason we chose these thinkers is that they represent specific understandings of causality in their fields of study. Emile Boutroux put forward an understanding of causality that emphasizes contingency and bases freedom on God. David Bohm discussed physical causality from a dialectical materialist perspective. As a molecular biologist, Jacques Monod tried to show that the replication mechanism of DNA works in a molecular mechanistic way. We focused on these three thinkers because we see their contributions as case studies in their fields of expertise.
