With the establishment of Trabzon Church in the first century AD which is traditionally, attributed to St. Andrew many monasteries, churches and chapels were built in the region in the Middle Ages and later. Painting is one of the most important elements that complete the church architecture. The primary purpose of Christian painting is to visually convey the memory of the sacred story and to educate church members, the majority of whom are illiterate. The dome, which represents the sky in Byzantine architecture, where mystical meanings are attributed to each unit of the church, was accepted as the place where God made himself felt in his house. The depiction of “Pantokrator”, that is, “the ruler of the universe” being one of the flamboyant types of Jesus iconography in Christian painting, is positioned on the dome according to the Mirror painting guide. Since she is the mother of Jesus, Virgin Mary has been the most important person in the Christian faith after Jesus. In Christian painting, many subjects related to the life of Mary were depicted, in addition, many themes such as “Theotokos” and “Platitera”, in which they were depicted with Jesus, were produced. In this study, the depictions of Jesus Pantocrator and Virgin Mary-Child Jesus seen in medieval and later Christian buildings in Trabzon will be evaluated.
