Starting from the point that the concept of craft involves a particular aesthetic component, this study examines how this aesthetic dimension is manifested in the surgical craft. Intensive use of technology in surgery, even to the extent of robotization, may render it invisible, yet this craft dimension is indispensable, especially in how surgeons define their work. As one of the oldest crafts, surgery used to have a lower status among the medical community until the twentieth century. As it turned into a high-status profession due to scientific and technological advancements, surgery also maintained its craft character, presenting an extraordinary example with regard to the well-established technology-craft opposition. Based on the findings of a completed PhD thesis, this study presents a pioneering research. The research was carried out in Istanbul and involves in-depth interviews with surgeons from different branches, as well as observations in the hospitals, clinics, and operating rooms.
