The historical foundations of Turkey-France relations can be traced back to the Crusades. The political relations between the Ottoman Empire and France really began during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. In this period, a capitulation agreement was signed with France in order to develop trade and prevent a crusader alliance against the Ottoman Empire. In the following periods, mutual relations with France expanded and began to change in size. Political and military failures in the 17th century caused the Ottomans to lose land, experience economic difficulties, and experience internal turmoil in the socio-cultural field. The westernization process, which started out of necessity in the 18th century, began to evolve into more realistic and permanent reform movements after the middle of the 19th century. Turning its direction to the west in this direction, the Ottoman Empire brought innovations in many fields to its country by interacting with France in a political, military and cultural sense. In the 19th century, the increasing industrial revolution and various technological inventions brought Western countries into the colonial race. The Ottoman lands, which became the focus of the Western Imperialist powers, became the center of the policy of divide, smash and rule in line with the interests of the European states with the nationalism movement spread by the French Revolution.
