Müzeler, arşivler, kütüphaneler gibi depolarında veya sergi salonlarında bulunan eserlerini doğru malzemelerle korumak isteyen kurumların pek çoğu hangi malzemeyi seçmeleri gerektiği konusunda kararsız kalabilmektedir. Bu kurumlardaki müdür, küratör, müze uzmanı, arşivci, konservatör gibi sorumlu personel gruplarından kişiler, uygun depolama ve sergileme malzemelerinin nitelikleri ve kullanım alanları hakkında yeterli bilgiye sahip olmayabilir veya seçim yapmakta zorlanabilir. Eserle uzun süre temas sırasında bozulmaya sebep olmayan, eseri en uygun şekilde muhafaza eden, destekleyen ve pek çok dış etkene karşı tampon vazifesi gören malzemelerin tercih edilmesi önemlidir. Koruyucu arşiv ve depolama malzemesi satan firmaların kataloglarında arşiv amaçlı ya da asitsiz olarak tanımlanan malzemeler, bazı koleksiyonların uzun süreli depolanması için uygun olmayabilir. Bu çalışmada, koleksiyonlardaki farklı objelerinin sergilenmesi ve depolaması için en uygun malzemeler tanımlanmaktadır. Güvenli plastikler, sentetik veya doğal kumaşlar, asitsiz ve tamponlu kağıtlar, kutular, yapıştırcılar, etiketler, boyalar gibi pek çok farklı malzemenin kullanım alanı belirtilerek piyasada bulunabilecek ürünler tablo biçiminde sıralanmaktadır. Kurumların malzeme seçiminde deneyimli bir konservatöre danışması ve üreticinin malzemenin koruma standartlarına uygunluğu konusunda yeterli çalışmanın yapıldığını teyit etmesi son derece önemlidir. Ödenekleri kısıtlı olan kültür kurumları için mali bakımdan sıkıntı yaratabilen koruma malzemelerinin alımı, mutlaka bilinçli tercihlerle yapılmalıdır. Bu çalışmanın, tercih konusunda sıkıntı yaşayan kişi ve kurumlara yardımcı olması amaçlanmaktadır.

Many of the institutions that want to protect their works in storage areas or exhibition halls such as museums, archives and libraries with the right materials can be hesitant about which material they should choose. Persons from responsible personnel groups such as directors, curators, museum specialists, archivists, conservators in these institutions may not have sufficient information about the qualities and purposes of use of storage and display materials or may have difficulty making a choice. It is important to choose materials that do not cause deterioration when in contact with the artwork for a long time, protect and support the work in the most appropriate way, and act as a buffer against many environmental factors. Materials defined as archival or acid-free in the catalogs of companies selling protective archive and storage materials may not be suitable for long-term storage of some collections. In this study, the most proper materials are defined for the display and storage of different objects in the collections. The usage areas of many different materials such as safe plastics, synthetic or natural fabrics, acid-free and buffered papers, boxes, adhesives, labels, paints are indicated and the products that can be purchased are listed in table form. It is extremely important for institutions to consult an experienced conservator about material selection and to ensure that the material sold by the manufacturer complies with the protection standards. The purchase of these conservation materials, which can cause financial difficulties for cultural institutions with limited funds, should be made with conscious choices. It is aimed that this study will help persons and institutions who have difficulties in choosing.
