UNGLAZED, EMBOSSED MOLD CERAMICS FOUND IN THE GEVALE CASTLE EXCAVATIONS

Gevale Castle which has been used as a structure for defence during the history, located in the west of Konya. The other parts such as walls, bulwarks, public baths, cisterns, and additional spaces of the castle at the base level of the structure has been unearthed during the excavation work have been found since 2013. Various finds were found in the excavations made in these places, and an important group of them is ceramics. Ceramics consists of glazed and unglazed groups, and this research mainly focuses on unglazed ceramics. Several adornments could be observed on unglazed ceramics dated to the 13th and 14th centuries that are made with embossed mold technique. Ceramics made with embossed mold, which has very rich examples in terms of form, motif and application diversity, have been in great demand. As the adornment features of the period, they were adorned with vegetal, geometric, figure and writing. This study will demonstrate various adornments on different forms of unglazed ceramics and their handbuilding techniques after comparing with the similar examples.
