Online Russian Courses: The Case Of Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal Universty

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the online teaching mode was abruptly adopted in delivering courses in higher education, as was the case in all other grades, which led to confusion among teachers or lecturers and negatively affected students' academic performance. This negative effect was most commonly felt the foreign language courses because the online system initially proved inefficient in learning a new language and even made this process more difficult. Admittedly, the new online learning systems seemed and sounded confusing at first. But over time it became possible to cope with various difficulties. Following the devastating earthquake that killed thousands of people in Turkey, university lectures were decided to be held online. In these difficult times for the country, the work of teachers and lectureres can be described as “inspiring, exciting and empowering”. “Teachers' efforts during this difficult period came out as unconditional support and cooperation”. Today, learners of Russian as a foreign language often do not feel free in real-life situations: they are unable to initiate or maintain dialogues or express their thoughts - they cannot speak Russian fluently. Why is this happening? If Russian as a foreign language (RFL) is taught in the usual way, that is, reading – translating texts, doing grammar exercises, answering a small number of questions about the text, a learner of Russian as a foreign language learns somehow to read, translate, answer questions in the text, but mostly memorises new words (i.e. to the extent that they are necessary for understanding the text). The purpose of our study: - To teach Russian as a foreign language (RFL) in online platforms in an informed and consistent manner; - to promote the successful formation of communicative competence. Expected outcomes: Students will be able to comprehend the aesthetic nature of Russian as a foreign language Students will be able to comprehend the importance of language and speech in social life Students will be able to evaluate their own results. In addition, our next goal in conducting online courses in teaching Russian as a foreign language is to provide an opportunity for beginners (i.e. from scratch) to learn to speak Russian so that they could learn those expressions that they will need in reallife communication starting with the first lesson. Thus, after each lesson, the students will be able to recognise how their vocabulary increases and how they speak Russian more freely every passing day. We also attach great importance to conducting online Russian courses in an interesting and fun way because this is an important factor in the effectiveness of learning. The system of exercises and other methodological materials for online teaching of Russian as a foreign language (RFL) will contribute to the formation of language proficiency in Russian among students at the initial stage of foreign language learning.
