RADIATION EXPOSURE, JOB SATISFACTION AND BURNOUT IN NURSES
Professional people spend most of their lives in the workplace. A reliable workplace ensures that employees are safe and healthy, and that work is done efficiently. Personnel working in the healthcare sector spend most of their time in hospitals, which are their working environments. Therefore, it is very important for healthcare professionals to work in a safe and healthy environment. Nursing is the professional group most affected by the negativities arising from the environment and all other reasons in institutions providing health services. Because nurses are responsible for care and are in direct contact with patients, they are more exposed to occupational risks and experience many problems arising from their profession. One of the occupational hazards faced by nurses working in different areas of hospitals is radiation exposure. Nurses are exposed to radiation through sources such as direct x-ray in emergency departments, portable in inpatient wards and intensive care units, scopy in operating rooms, and c-arm x-ray in angiography units. It is known that radiation, which is considered a risk factor in terms of occupational health and safety, causes stress in employees. It is emphasized that stress arising from the working environment can cause decreased job satisfaction, disruption of work-life balance and burnout in employees. It is stated that radiation exposure causes physical and psychological harm to nurses and this may lead to burnout. It is reported in the literature that nurses are generally not sufficiently aware of radiation protection. The quality of services provided in health institutions largely depends on the health of the service providers and the protection of their health. In this context, quality and safe working environments where nurses are comfortable, satisfied with their work, will increase the quality of the care and service they provide to patients. For this reason, nurses should be given necessary training about radiation and its dangers, and radiation protection methods should be explained. In addition, the protective equipment necessary to protect against radiation should be provided and the regular use of these equipment by nurses should be encouraged.
