EXAMINATION OF THE OPINIONS OF INTERN STUDENTS STUDYING AT RECEP TAYYIP ERDOĞAN UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF DENTISTRY ON PERIODONTOLOGY SPECIALIZATION

Aim: Dentistry faculties are educational institutions where theoretical and practical education is provided together. The education period of dentistry faculties in our country is 5 years. The first 3 years of this education include preclinical education and the last 2 years include clinical applications on patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the opinions of students studying at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Faculty of Dentistry in the academic year 2024-2025 about Periodontics specialization. Material and Method: A total of 195 students, all of whom were 4th and 5th year students studying at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Faculty of Dentistry, participated in the study. 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students were not included in the study. Students were asked to fill out a 23-question survey including their demographic information, preclinical, clinical, and specialization topics of Periodontology, and comparison of the Department of Periodontology with other departments. Descriptive and frequency analyses and chi-square (Fisher's) test were used to analyze the data. In the calculations, the statistical significance level was taken as p<0.05. Results: The answers to the question about the future need for periodontologists showed statistically significant differences with the age and gender of the students (p<0.05). The most common reason for choosing the Periodontology department was financial expectations (31%), while the reason for not choosing it was the long duration of treatments (40.5%). In the comparison with other specialties, the order of preference for the Periodontology specialty was determined as 3rd, and it was also in the 3rd place in terms of malpractice with 28.3%. Conclusion: It was concluded that the interest and preference for Periodontology specialization is in a good place and will increase over time.
